Data mining techniques can prove to be very useful for deciphering and making the most of the information that Web surfers leave behind on your Web site.
When using data mining techniques, it is important to know your visitor, to set established goals, and use good marketing techniques such as targeting and association.
Data Mining techniques prove to be most useful when you know what types of data to collect from your Web site in order to effectively enhance your customer base.
Even though using data mining to collect and analyze web surfer activity is beneficial, it can prove to be expensive when using various data mining applications.
However, the more you understand the data that is analyzed through data mining techniques, the more you will be able to effectively compete against those who offer similar products and services.
The use of data mining techniques to decipher the information that web surfers leave on your Web site can raise privacy issues and concerns. The author of this article recommends having a privacy policy in place in order to inform Web surfers of how they will use the information that they collect.

The article generally recommends that Web pages take 10 seconds or less to load or you will run the risk of losing up to 25% of your visitors if your page takes longer to load.
The author of the article recommends keeping your Web page design simple and straight forward by trying to design it to load hypothetically on a slower modem such as one with 28 kbps (kilobits per second) or 56 kpbs. By designing your Web page to hypothetically load on a slower modem, you are taking into consideration those individuals who are not familiar with or do not have access to cable or DSL (digital subscriber line) modems.
I was surprised to learn from the article that Yahoo's Web page generally takes around 5 seconds to load, and as a result, is one of the most visited Web pages on the World Wide Web.
In addition, the author made mention that it actually took over 20 Web page designers to come up with the current Yahoo Web page template which was originally designed in the mid 1990s.
Not only that, but there are also good general recommendations given on how to optimize the speed of your Web site such as removing excess bandwith add-ons.
The application layer, or top layer of the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) networking model is what the author is referring to when they discuss the concept of an application-level protocol.
Nonetheless, according to the article, the application-level protocol is required to do the communication between a client and server in this type of application being discussed.
In general, the author of the article supports the idea that the XML Web programming language can be a good choice to implement an application-level protocol.
In discussing the general concept of a protocol, the author states that any protocol consists of key elements such as a syntax, semantics, and overall timing of the protocol. The article also mentions that it is important to abide by certain specific guidelines when designing an application-level protocol for this type of purpose.
Overall, there are many good points brought up about the use of the XML Web programming language when dealing with an application-level protocol. For example, the XML language is somewhat easy to learn and the structure of a document including the XML language allows for the addition of new elements without affecting data or programming code that is already present.
